Jonathan B. Edvane
Jonathan B. Edvane

I am a British writer of dark fantasy. My work draws on folklore, established fantasy traditions, and original myth-making. I am currently completing my first novel.

I spent over fifty years writing fantasy, dark fiction and strange tales for myself, for my children, and primarily for my own pleasure. The worlds accumulated quietly, at first in notebooks and later on a hard drive, while I immersed myself in the worlds of Tolkien, Le Guin and Howard and played Dungeons and Dragons. Later that became Rowling, Martin and World of Warcraft. I am now publishing.

My work does not belong to this century, or the last. It is set in places that feel old. But not because they are picturesque. Because the ground remembers. The darkness is purposeful. The violence earns its place. The moral register is earnest, not ironic.

Two bodies of work

What I write

The Marchlands

The Durn Yew  ·  Tales from the Woldwood  ·  The Shivering Vale

A vast dark fantasy world of ancient magic and forgotten histories. Forty tales are being released across the Marchlands every Tuesday and Friday on Substack and YouTube. The first novel — The Shivering Vale, Book One of the Durn Yew series — is complete and publishing soon on Amazon in physical edition only.

Edvane Stories

A separate body of work published, and added to regularly, at edvanestories.com. Ghost stories, folklore, historical mysteries and a drop of fan fiction. Rarely set in this century, or the last.

On payment

My novels are the only thing I ever intend to ask payment for. Everything else — the forty tales, the weekly short fiction, the YouTube readings, the archive — is free, and will remain so.

This is not a calculated marketing strategy. It is a position. The work exists to be read. If it finds readers who value it, some of them may choose to support it. That choice is entirely theirs.

Those who support my work at Ko-fi will find something there worth their time: exclusive thoughts on the published material, notes on the process, and answers to any question put to me. No subscription. No paywall. Free to view. I answer everything.
